Kerala, often referred to as "God's Own Country," is a breathtaking state nestled along India's southwestern coast. Known for its lush landscapes, serene backwaters, and rolling hills, Kerala captivates travelers with its natural beauty and vibrant culture.
Konad is a small town, tucked away on Kerala's coastline — and since it’s located just four kilometers from the beach, locals here have a deep connection with the ocean.
Before our Clean Konad project, none of the households in this town had access to state waste management services, meaning the community had few options when it came to disposing of their waste — the main ones being:
Burning it in an open environment (66% of people)
Dumping it in the ocean (19% of people)
Burying in the ground (10% of people)
Handing it over to the state (5% of people)
Fast forward to today, and we now fund the collection of plastic waste from 863 people — living in 179 different homes.

The small town of Chemnad sits just a few kilometers from the coast, and is home to friendly faces, dramatic landscapes, and calming coastlines.
Before we implemented our Clean Chemnad project, this beautiful town was also home to a piling plastic pollution problem, due to an inefficient waste management system.
A few years ago, locals had only one healthy way of dealing with trash: waste collection from a small self-help group of 38 women. Despite their best efforts, only 20-30% of local people engaged with their service as they didn’t have the right resources.
Fast forward to today, and CleanHub is keeping Chemnad clean by funding proper waste management to over 13,500 houses and 700 shops, helping over 80% of locals with their trash.

2024 was full of big milestones for us, including opening our very own Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Kasaragod, Kerala.
This state-of-the-art facility is a major leap forward in our mission to protect coastal communities and keep oceans plastic-free!
By using this facility to sort and process waste efficiently, we’re making it easier than ever to stop plastic pollution head-on. Not only will this increase our collection efforts, but it’ll also bring a new level of transparency to our operations.
But that’s not all.
This new facility is also creating local jobs — empowering community members to be part of the solution while boosting the economy and cleaning up the environment.
There are lots of features that we’re proud to have at this facility, and here’s a brief overview:
• Storage area — Where we store all the waste before unloading and sorting it
• A 10-meter conveyor belt — Here, the workers are able to sort through the trash and separate the materials
• Packing and baling area — Workers can compact materials using specialized machinery in this area, making the waste much easier to transport
• State-of-the-art ventilation and insulation panels — It’s no secret that Kerala gets hot, which is why we have these features in place to keep everyone cool
• Lunchroom — Not just a place to eat, but also a space where employees can relax and catch up with colleagues
• Artwork! — To promote our message and what we’re all about: a healthier, cleaner planet
But don’t just take our word for it. Take a tour around the MRF with Joel, our Co-Founder and CEO, in the video below.
